You may have read the recent blog post on Isotonik Studios on our Metropolis Productions website. If you haven’t, we’ve been working closely together to add features to their Max For Live device called Follow. This works natively through the digital audio workstation Ableton Live.
Ableton Live
We use Ableton live to run our multichannel playback. We switched from Mainstage a couple of months ago and because we needed to achieve the following:
- Flexible forms & looping sections of songs
- Tempo flexibility
- Quick key changes
- Instantaneous dropping in & out of sections / scenes
Follow Plug In
To help us achieve this Isotonik studios have given us invaluable technical support. They have listened to closely to how we use Ableton on gigs and as a result developed the following features for ‘Follow’:
- Simplified control of the 'follow action' being linked to the device’s on / off state
- Adjustable 'trigger time' to work with high tempos and large sets that draw a lot of CPU
- Foot Switch control to enable toggling between two preset 'follow actions' for use when hand’s are at a premium
- Control over the internal Metronome using 'clip envelopes'
- 'Floating window' that’s magnifiable, and contains a heads up display of the current follow action, the current and next clip/scene to be played, countdown and progress bar for the current clip, current tempo and current time signature…
Development
Darren from Isotonik Studios says “ It’s the floating window that you really inspired me to create, it made absolute sense once i’d understood how you were using it….”We’ll be creating some in depth videos of our exact live set up over the next couple of months.
